Adjust IT contracts with Brazil's official IT cost index

Enter the period and the amount: the calculator pulls the ICTI — Brazil's Information Technology Cost Index — straight from IPEADATA and applies the standard adjustment formula. No sign-up, no cost.

Methodology

How the calculation works

The calculator applies the standard index-number adjustment formula, the same one used with the IPCA, the IGP-M and other Brazilian indicators:

adjusted value = original value × (final ICTI ÷ base ICTI)

The percentage variation over the period is that ratio minus one. Values are not rounded at any intermediate step — only the final currency formatting is applied.

Why is the previous month used as the base? So that the variation of the budget month itself is included, the divisor is the index of the month immediately before the date you enter. If the budget is dated January, the base is December of the previous year.

Where does the data come from? From series DIMAC12_ICTI3 of the public IPEADATA API, queried at the moment of the calculation. No value is ever typed in by hand.

The index

What is the ICTI?

The Information Technology Cost Index (ICTI) is calculated monthly by IPEA — the Institute for Applied Economic Research, a Brazilian federal research body — to measure price variation for technology products and services in Brazil. Its basket covers hardware and components, software licensing and specialised services, including wage variation among IT professionals.

Because it is a sector index, the ICTI reflects the real cost structure of anyone buying or supplying technology — something broad indices such as the IPCA or the IGP-M capture poorly. That is why Brazilian public bodies and private companies use it as the reference in IT contract adjustment clauses.

If you read Portuguese, our blog goes deeper into how the ICTI compares with other indices and how to write an adjustment clause.

Frequently asked

Questions and answers

What is the ICTI used for?

To adjust technology contracts so they track inflation specific to the IT sector — hardware, software and specialised services — fairly and transparently for both parties.

Who uses the ICTI?

Private companies, public bodies in tenders and administrative contracts, and consultancies that manage IT contracts in Brazil.

Is the data official?

Yes. The index values come straight from the public IPEADATA API, the official data portal of IPEA, at the moment of the calculation.

How does the calculator work?

It applies the standard adjustment formula: adjusted value = original value × (final index ÷ base index). The base index is the one from the month before the budget date, so the variation of the first month is included.

How often is the ICTI published?

IPEA publishes the ICTI monthly. Publication can lag the reference month by a few days or weeks — if the index for a month is not out yet, the calculator says so.

Can the ICTI be used in public sector contracts?

Yes. Brazil's Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), in Ruling 2.622/2015 – Plenary, recommends sector-specific indices such as the ICTI for IT contract adjustments — provided the index is named in a contract clause.
